What is DivX Video-on-Demand?

DivX Video-on-Demand (VOD) is a digital video delivery service that allows you to download and enjoy high-quality video content from a diverse group of DivX content partners. DivX technology has been delivering DVD-quality, Internet VOD for over 3 years. And today, DivX is expanding that service, offering the ability to play VOD content downloaded from the Internet right on a TV with a DivX Certified DVD player.

Is the quality of DivX VOD content comparable to that of a DVD?

Yes. The DivX codec enables DVD-quality video at file sizes small enough for Internet delivery.

What do I need to start watching DivX VOD content?

All you need to enjoy DivX VOD content are a PC with the free DivX Player software installed and a broadband Internet connection. If you want to enjoy DivX VOD on your television, buy a DivX Certified DVD player and register it.

How do I get a DivX VOD account?

Setting up a DivX VOD account and registering devices to play DivX VOD content is easy and requires only a few simple steps. The steps are outlined in detail on the DivX VOD: How It Works page on DivX.com.

How long does it take to download a DivX VOD file?

Depending on your Internet connection, it could take as little as a few seconds or as long as a few hours. Most users with broadband connections will be able to view VOD files within a few minutes.

Does DivX VOD "stream" video?

Nope. Videos are viewable so soon after the download is initiated thanks to the DivX Player’s progressive playback technology, which can start playing files before the download is complete. However, live event streaming, which sacrifices quality, is not used.

Can I download a DivX VOD file and watch it later?

Yes. You may download an entire video and watch it later. Unlike streaming, where the file must be streamed at the time of viewing, you can play a DivX VOD file anytime you want without having to download it again.

If my download stalls, do I have to start it over again from the beginning?

No. Next time you open the file, it will automatically begin downloading from the point where it left off.

Can I copy DivX VOD files and play them on another computer, such as my work computer?

Yes, DivX VOD content belongs to a user account, not a computer. While the video file may be copied, it remains encrypted and can only be viewed by the user who has the rights to view it. The user would simply register the second computer with their username and password to play the copied content.

Can I buy video titles through the DivX VOD service?

Yes. The DivX VOD service lets you rent or buy videos. Purchases never expire and you can watch them as many times as you wish.

Do I have to watch DivX VOD on my PC?

No. DivX VOD content may be enjoyed on a PC or on a TV. With a DivX Certified DVD player, simply burn DivX VOD titles to disc and pop them in your player to enjoy them right on your TV.

What is the DivX Certified Program?

The DivX Certified Program sets standards so consumer electronics manufacturers can make products that support DivX video. DivX Certified products can play all versions of DivX video, including DivX 3, 4, 5 and DivX VOD.

What else do I need to watch DivX VOD on my TV?

You’ll need your PC to be equipped with the DivX Player and a broadband Internet connection. If you plan to watch on your TV, you’ll also need a CD burner and a DivX Certified DVD player. To watch DivX VOD on your TV, simply burn the title you download onto a disc and play it in your DivX Certified DVD player. This disc may be either a CD-R or a DVD-R.

Will full length (90 minute) VOD movies fit on a standard CD?

Yes. DivX video compression is so powerful that a feature length, DVD-quality 90 minute video will fit on one regular 700 MB CD-ROM.

Will every DivX VOD title play back on a registered DivX Certified device?

It is up to the content provider to decide which content they wish to make available for playback on a DivX Certified device. The DivX Player will indicate which VOD titles are enabled for DivX Certified device playback.

Do I need to setup my DivX Certified device to work with DivX VOD content?

Yes. You’ll have to register your DivX Certified devices to play DivX VOD content. The registration process is easy and needs only be completed once for each device. To register a device, simply enter the eight character code from your player into your VOD account.

How many DivX Certified devices am I allowed to register to my VOD account?

You may register up to six playback devices within a six month period (and 10 in one year).

Say I had a collection of VOD content burned to CDs, and then purchased a new player device, would I need to make a new set of CDs in order to watch that content on my new player?

No. The exact same CDs will work in your new player as soon as you register the device.

How are video rental expirations managed on DivX Certified devices?

DivX VOD rentals for DivX Certified devices can expire in one of two ways.

Number of views – This model lets you play a rental a set number of times before it expires. Views are counted only when the file is completely stopped. You may, pause, fast forward or rewind as much as you like without using multiple views.

New expires the old – Each VOD customer can have eight rentals at a time. This model lets you keep the rental and watch it as many times as you want, but if all eight slots are full, you must expire one before you can rent a new video.

In the number of views model, if I download a rental with five views, does that mean I get 10 views if I own two registered DivX Certified players?

Yes. Each video authorized for five plays may be played five times on each DivX Certified device registered to your user account. Consider it our way of saying thanks for purchasing DivX Certified products.
